 Become a Medical Assistant Apprentice

UM Health-Sparrow launched a 24-week medical assistant apprenticeship class in 2018. This fast-track program is approved by the Department of Labor and is operated through Lansing Community College (LCC).

LCC provides one-on-one, hands-on instruction from UM Health-Sparrow’s highly skilled team members. UM Health-Sparrow covers the cost of the program, including tuition, books, scrubs, and wages during clinical hours.

About the Apprenticeship

  • Approximately 24 weeks in length
  • Combination of classroom instruction and clinical training
  • Full-time, paid position while in the program
  • Tuition, books, and scrubs are provided at no cost
  • Opportunity to move into a Medical Assistant role upon successful completion


Basic Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Interest in working in a clinical/healthcare setting
  • Ability to commit to a full-time training program


This program is an investment in your future—and ours. Apprentices are expected to commit to a full-time Medical Assistant role for two years with UM Health-Sparrow after completing the program.

How to Apply

We anticipate the next apprenticeship cohort to begin in January 2027.

Recruiting and applications will open around August–September 2026.

Once applications open and you apply, our team will guide you through each step of the process, including any required testing or next steps.
